Passengers: public attitude change is the best solution to reduce fare dodger numbers

A majority of passengers believe that the number of fare dodgers in public transport can be reduced if the society changes its attitude to people who do not pay fare. It results from an opinion survey on the Rīgas satiksme website.

63% respondents share the opinion that the introduction of the new system of fines will not result in any changes without a more active involvement of the society and changing its attitude to the problem of fare dodgers. 8% of respondents believe that the new system is just because the fines have been increased for regular fare dodgers.

3% of respondents believe that there are no tools to improve the situation other than fines, but 2% believe that the introduction of penalties will reduce the number of fare dodgers.

24% respondents say the problem of fare dodgers does not concern them because they always pay fare.

More than 1000 "Rīgas satiksme" webpages visitors participated in the opinion survey that was held in November.

"Rīgas satiksme" reminds that fine rates and procedure of paying fines changed on November 26, when penalties were introduced. Now fare dodgers can either pay a fine of 3 lats on spot or pay a penalty of 5 lats within one month from the bill drawing date, if the penalty is imposed for the first time in 12 months, or 10 lats in case of a repeated fine.
